What is a bruise?
Discoloration of the skin due to the rupturing of blood vessels. Another common name for a bruise is a contusion.
There are many different reasons that someone might get a bruise. Here are a few…
- Bumping into something or someone
- Strenuous exercise
- Blood disorders
- Vitamin deficiency
- Old age
How do they heal?
Initially, bruises may start off as a reddish spot and turn to a black/purple spot. The bruise will eventually turn a yellowish color as it heals. What causes this color change? When you first bump into something, the blood vessels in the area are now damaged. The blood can move towards the tissue of the skin and this can be seen as a bump.
Bruising can occur more easily in some individuals that others. For example if you are taking some medication that prevents blood clotting, then you will more than likely have more bruises on your body than the average human.
